In the Apple Tree
Mariposa is Spanish for Butterfly but it has also been used as a derogatory term for gays similar to the childhood term Pansy or Pansy Boy here in the U.S./UK. Used to bully many gay men have reclaimed these words, among others, as a celebration of being fierce, beautiful and proud. The Mariposa series does just that. A single vintage cutout of a boy or man are carefully placed atop vintage lithographs in the first 7 below, measuring 7” x 4.5”, and atop pages from a vintage butterfly encyclopedia in the 36 larger pieces measuring approx 8” x 10”

Springboard for the Mariposa Series is the American Pansy Boys, 4” x 6” each. Vintage pansy postcards were sourced on eBay and the vintage American postcards, which I had on hand in the studio, became the perfect framing device. While searching for pansy postcards I discovered the vintage scallop edged, pansy handkerchiefs, 12” x 12”. I love these as a further connection to delicacy, home and a connection to the maternal (be it mother, aunt or grandmother).
